Tooth Whitening
|
At Robinson and Gray Dental Surgery in Geelong we are able to offer our patients the latest technology in teeth whitening systems. For over 2 years now we have be using the innovative Zoom 'in-clinic' tooth whitening systems. More recently we have introduced Zoom3 Advanced Power to our practice, the most recently developed technology in tooth whitening.
Many of you may be familiar with the Zoom teeth whitening system from television shows such as Extreme Makeover. After Zoom whitening we have been told by our patients that they look and feel like celebrities! |

Zoom is a system that has been thoroughly researched and combines the use of traditional whitening solutions with light activation. Together these technologies speed up the whitening process giving you whiter teeth in less time. Studies have also shown that through using professional in-clinic whitening systems, patients can maintain the brightness longer than using 'at home' treatments.

The zoom whitening system works by using a hydrogen peroxide based gel. Light activation breaks down the hydrogen peroxide which releases oxygen. The layer of the tooth which determines shade is known as dentine. Oxygen gently penetrates the outer layer enamel and enters the dentine to lighten coloured substances. |
As more people are interested in improving the appearance of their smile, there have been many studies done over recent years to review the safety of using such whitening systems. Tooth whitening is a well established procedure in cosmetic dentistry. The active ingredient in Zoom which is hydrogen peroxide has been used safely in dentistry for many years. Teeth whitening used under professional supervision is safe, however it is not advised for children under 13 years of age, or pregnant or lactating women.
What does a chairside whitening appointment involve?
Your whitening appointment will include taking impressions for home whitening trays which ensures that a desired shade can be maintained after the completion of chairside whitening. Home whitening trays are specially made for your teeth, they mould over the teeth and are a similar appearance to mouth guards, yet they are a finer thickness and more comfortable and flexible. A whitening solution is applied to the inside of these custom trays and is used 48hours after Zoom, and whenever the patient feels that they want to again brighten their smile.
The teeth are then isolated using specialised isolation methods basically covering your lips and gums to leave only the teeth exposed. The whitening solution will then be applied to the teeth in three 15minute cycles. After the application of the solution, a light is aligned in front of the teeth. Some patients may require up to 4 applications of the solution, this is to ensure the best result possible is achieved.
A Zoom appointment generally takes an hour and a half.
Take Home Whitening
The other option for tooth whitening which appeals to some patients is take-home whitening trays. These are the same as the trays provided for patients when they undergo Zoom treatment. After having a dental impression taken, we will provide you with custom made home-use trays.
This method of whitening is designed for the patient to use at home. Every day for possibly as long as three weeks a whitening solution will be placed in the trays, the trays are then to be worn for 2-3 hours duration after each application. During this time no food or drink is to be consumed by the patient. Some patients prefer to wear their trays to bed, however extending the time the trays are placed in the mouth does not achieve a quicker, whiter result, as after 3 hours the solution has de-activated.
Take-home whitening trays will need to be used whenever it is felt necessary by the patient to brighten their smile.
