Is Teeth Whitening safe?
Teeth whitening used under professional supervision is safe, however it is not advised for children under 13 years of age, or pregnant or lactating women.
Chairside Tooth Whitening Procedure
Pre Teeth Whitening
After you have contacted Geelong Smile Studio requesting a chairside teeth whitening procedure, a smile assessment appointment will be made.
This 20 minute consultation will involve assessment of your gum health and suitability of your teeth for chairside whitening.
It is imperative that your oral hygiene and gum health be of a very high standard prior to your whitening procedure.
A visit to the dental hygienist may be prescribed prior to the tooth whitening procedure to ensure optimal whitening results.
Impressions of your teeth will also be taken at the smile assessment to make your customised whitening trays.
Teeth Whitening Procedure
For best results the teeth are “conditioned” by a 2 week course of at home whitening.
Then we are ready to do our in office treatment. The teeth are isolated using a specialised isolation technique.
The whitening solution will then be applied to the teeth in up to three 15 minute cycles.
An in office appointment generally takes an hour and a half.
After chairside tooth whitening
For some 48 hours following the chairside whitening procedure, your teeth are more susceptible to staining. We recommend that you avoid any foods or drinks that may stain a white t-shirt. For example, coffee, tea, soft drinks, red wine, juices, curries, coloured lollies, etc.
Some people experience a transient sensitivity following the whitening. The application of GC Tooth Mousse can be beneficial, along with ibuprofen.
You will also be provided with a take home tooth whitening kit, which will enable you to brighten up your smile whenever you feel your teeth need a lift.
Take Home Tooth Whitening
Teeth Whitening Trays
An alternative option for tooth whitening are take-home whitening trays.
These trays are the same as the trays provided for patients when they undergo in office treatment.
The Home Tooth Whitening Process
First we take an impression of your teeth. Then two days later, you will be provided with customised whitening trays which you will use to whiten your teeth.
This method of tooth whitening involves the careful placement of home whitening solution in the trays. The trays are then worn in the mouth from 2 to 3 hours, up to the entire night.
During this time no food or drink is to be consumed by the patient.
A Whiter, Brighter Smile
This technique of whitening takes longer than the chairside whitening procedure.
