At your dental appointments

With every 1 in 10 Australians suffering from Asthma, it can be a serious condition that can affect individuals of any age and can also increase your risk of dental diseases and other dental complications.

Effects of Asthma on your dental health

If you are using an inhaler, you may have an increased risk of developing fungal infections, dental decay, periodontal (gum) diseases, dental erosion and dry mouth.

What you can do at home

Rinsing your mouth out with water will remove any residue from your inhaler that may cause dental problems.
Try using a spacer – using a spacer reduces the direct contact of the chemicals in your inhaler to your mouth.

At your dental appointments

Know your triggers – Let your dental practitioner know what causes your asthma, for example, exercise or dust.
Make sure you bring your inhalers to your appointments incase of an asthma attack.

If you have any concerns, you can discuss these with your health and dental care providers or feel free to contact Geelong Smile Studio on 0352 216 610 with any further questions.
