Finding the Right Toothbrush

Toothbrush designs have certainly come a long way in the past 5,000 years; graduating from the use of twigs, to toothbrushes crafted with bone that held the stiff bristles of hogs, boars or other animals.

The nylon-bristled toothbrush, as we know it today, was invented in 1938.

In today's marketplace we are bombarded with a vast array of both manual and powered toothbrushes with different shapes, sizes, angles, and bristle types.

Beware the warning signs of Gum Disease

In our last post we discussed how gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss that is completely preventable with good oral hygiene, regular professional cleaning of the teeth by a dental hygienist and removal of risk factors such as smoking.

By the way, smokers are 20 times more likely to have gum disease than non-smokers!

More frightening than just tooth loss is the strong association between gum disease and other chronic inflammatory conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, pregnancy problems and some respiratory diseases.

Keep Your Teeth for Life

Over the coming months I will discuss several of the common (and not so common) aspects of maintaining optimal dental care.

This series of posts will concentrate on the most common cause of tooth loss in adults – periodontal (gum) disease.

Your teeth are supposed to last a lifetime! Unfortunately, periodontal disease affects millions of Australians and most do not even know that they have it.

The main cause of periodontal disease (and dental decay) is bacterial plaque – a sticky, colourless film of bacteria.

Other causes of gum disease include smoking, genetics, pregnancy/menopause, stress, medications, clenching and grinding teeth, and diabetes.
