Neuromuscular dentistry is a revolutionary new approach to dentistry treatment. Typically dentists have tended to concern themselves solely with gums and teeth. However this ignores many other factors that affect bite and general health such as muscles, nerves and joints. Thankfully Geelong neuromuscular dentists, Dr. Jason Gray & Dr. Alison Robinson understand the importance of treating the head, neck, jaw and mouth as a harmonious whole.

What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)?

Do you know that 90% of chronic headaches are caused by muscular problems in the jaw? This is a common symptom of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), and can be treated effectively by realigning the jaw using neuromuscular dentistry.

Other symptoms of TMD include:

  • Dizziness
  • Shoulder and neck pain
  • Pain in the jaw joints, jaw popping and clicking
  • Tinnitus or ear ringing
  • Significant wear and tear of teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Insomnia
  • Migraines
  • Sore or sensitive teeth

How can TMD be treated?

The neuromuscular dentists at Geelong Smile Studio treat TMD by assessing the optimal position of your jaw, and then realign the jaw accordingly, correcting any abnormalities in bite.

This may be achieved via the use of a splint or mouth guard. Either of these appliances will prevent cramping of the neck and face muscles thus relieving symptoms. In some cases orthodontics may be required to reposition teeth in order to create a comfortable bite and proper alignment.

Once a person's bite has been stabilised, symptoms of TMD will disappear, and normal movements of the jaw will no longer cause pain.
