FRESH BYTES NEWSLETTER

(A newsletter for the friends and patients of Robinson and Gray Dental Surgery.)

"The past is history, the future a mystery.
Today is a gift, that's why we call it the present!"

8th Edition - Autumn 2008

Would you like a Smile Makeover for half the normal price?
Dr Jason Gray has been selected to participate in a prestigious dental course.  As you know, Dr Gray is committed to being the best dentist possible for his patients, and this course will improve his skills and take his dental knowledge to even higher levels.

For the next part of the curriculum, Dr Gray requires a patient for a SMILE MAKEOVER and he wants to offer one of his patients a special one-off opportunity to assist him in achieving this goal.

As a thank you, he is offering a reduction of 50% OFF the normal fee which covers the lab and technical costs.  Wouldn’t that be wonderful!

If this is of interest to you or one of your friends, please contact the practice immediately on
5221 6610 ASAP so that you do not miss out.

Dr Gray will be selecting one lucky patient. Please see the letter at the bottom of this page from LVI Australia, the Institute conducting the training for the logistics.

To be in the running to take advantage of this opportunity, you will need to act immediately.

News of the Robinson and Gray Dental Surgery Team
We are extremely proud to announce that one of our most popular team members has recently been accepted into the University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Dental Hygiene course.  This is a wonderful achievement for Stacey Hochreiter.  Although Stacey will be greatly missed, we look forward to welcoming her back to the practice in three years as a fully fledged Dental Hygienist.

When one door closes, another opens and so we welcome Pauline McKinlay to the team.

Pauline is now Jason's main Clinical Assistant, and comes to the practice with a wealth of experience.  Pauline has worked previously for general dentists and specialist dentists in Melbourne and Geelong.

Pauline's bubbly and easy- going personality has enabled her to fit perfectly into the team.

Alesia Atkins also joins the team as we continue to grow.  Alesia assists two of our fantastic Dental Hygienists, Carly Ross and Kim Carroll (who we will welcome back from maternity leave in April).

Emails
We are currently on an email drive to enable us to communicate with you more effectively.  When you next attend the practice, we will check to see if you have provided us with an email address that we can use to contact you.  This will make sure that you receive all future editions of Fresh Bytes.
You can email your address to us at

Dental Hygiene Corner
Have you ever experienced any of these symptoms
:
• a sore or tired jaw - particularly upon awakening?
• headaches?
• sensitive teeth?
• ear aches or pain in your jaw joints?

Studies have indicated that clenching and grinding of teeth (Bruxism) occurs in 30% of the population.  However, we suspect that this may be an underestimation.  Bruxism usually occurs unbeknown to the individual whilst sleeping, or in times of increased stress.

A related study revealed that the forces that individuals can exert on their teeth, muscles and jaw joints is significantly greater whilst sleeping, than when conscious, awake and chewing.  If left untreated, bruxism can lead to:

• gum recession
• flattening or worn down tooth surfaces

- resulting in:

• loss of tooth height, which results in increased wrinkles!
• loosening of teeth
• damage to the jaw bones
• temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
• fracturing of teeth at the gum line

The first line of treatment of bruxism is often the provision of an occlusal splint (night splint).  An occlusal splint is a custom-made device which is tailored to fit over your teeth, and is worn whilst sleeping to physically protect your teeth from the harmful effects of bruxism.

Be sure to bring any of the above symptoms to our attention when we next see you!

Hot Cross Buns - everyone's fave!
This one is Briony's wicked recipe!

Makes 12

7g sachet (2 teaspoons) dry yeast
¼ cup caster sugar
½ cup of warmed low fat milk
2½ cups of plain flour
1 teaspoon of mixed spice
50g butter chilled and chopped
1 egg lightly beaten
¾ cup sultanas
1 teaspoon powdered gelatine
⅓cup plain flour
1 tablespoon caster sugar

Grease a 4 cm deep slice pan, place yeast, sugar and milk in a bowl. Stir until combined and yeast dissolved.  Cover and set aside for 10 mins or until foamy.

Sift flour and mixed spice into a bowl, rub in butter until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.  Make a well in the centre of flour mixture.  Add yeast mixture, ¼ cup warm water, egg and sultanas to combine.  Cover and set aside in a warm place for 1 hour or until dough doubles in size.

Preheat oven to 200۫۫C.  Knead dough for 5-8 mins and form 12 balls.  Cover and set aside for 45 mins.

Make flour paste for crosses by whisking flour, sugar and ¼ cup cold water together in a jug.  Pipe crosses onto the buns.

Bake buns for 10 mins and then reduce to 160۫C and continue to bake for 15 mins until golden.

Place 3 teaspoons of hot water in a jug and sprinkle gelatine over water.  Stir until gelatine dissolves and brush buns with mixture.

Enjoy!  Briony recommends you brush and floss after eating sweet treats such as these.

Special One-Time Opportunity from LVI

I am always pleased to let patients know how special their dentist is. We tend to take it for granted that 'our dentist' is the best, yet being the best takes an ongoing, and substantial commitment to professional development and continuing education.  Your dentist has made such a commitment by undertaking a rigorous program of post-graduate dental training with the world-renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI).  Fewer than 1% of dentists in the United States (and less than 20 Australian dentists) have completed this demanding course of study, encompassing the most advanced techniques in aesthetic and neuromuscular dentistry.  Your dentist will soon join this elite group.

LVI Australia was launched in 2004 with the goal of making this advanced training more readily available to Australian dentists, and ultimately their patients.  The good news is that there exists a one-time only chance for a patient in this practice to obtain a beautiful 'Smile Makeover' at a substantially reduced fee (as a thank-you for assisting your dentist to take advantage of this amazing opportunity).

Everyone wants a beautiful smile, but sometimes cost is a barrier that stands in the way.  This could be your opportunity to have that beautiful smile.  The best news though is that your treatment will be individually supervised and supported by highly experienced US trained instructors from LVI Australia ensuring the best possible result is achieved.  There will be smiles all round!

Some of the logistics:

• Course is held at LVI Australia in Brisbane
• Course dates April 7-9 and May 1-3 2008
• You would be required for an afternoon or morning on one day in each of these sessions
• Not every person would be a suitable patient
• You would need to be assessed for your suitability and the case will need to be approved by LVI Australia

If you have always wanted a smile that reflects who you are on the inside, and would love to take advantage of this one-time only opportunity, please contact your dentist ASAP to arrange an assessment to see if it will be possible for you.

And, by the way, congratulations on choosing your dentist, someone who is committed to being the best that they can be, and that can only mean great benefits for you.

Yours sincerely

Dr Anne-Maree Cole

Director LVI Australia

Believe it or not, we are a quarter of the way through 2008! Easter is a fantastic time of the year and we wish the Robinson and Gray dental family a very happy and safe Easter.

Valentine's Day was fun in the practice, with the ladies who attended for treatment receiving a single red rose, and the men some yummy chocolates.  Even the female team members each received something special for the day!
