Where the diagnosis of dental decay has historically relied on visual examination, tactile sensation and radiographs, we now have an additional adjunct in our armamentarium known as the DIAGNOdent.
The DIAGNOdent emits a fluorescent light (wavelength 655 nm) which alerts us to any change in the pathological composition of the tooth. Normal healthy tooth structure does not exhibit fluorescence at this wavelength, however decayed (carious) tooth structure will exhibit fluorescence proportionate to the degree of dental caries. The DIAGNOdent will report a numerical and audio scale which will inform the operator and patient to the severity of the tooth decay lesion.
The importance of the DIAGNOdent was illustrated in a study whereby dentists correctly diagnosed dental decay using in the traditional methods in 57% of the cases whereby, the same group achieved a success rate of over 90% using the DIAGNOdent. The question needs to be asked “Can you afford for your dentist NOT to have a DIAGNOdent?”
