Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)
|
Have you been delaying going to the dentist? Or is just the word 'dentist' or ‘smells’ enough to send shivers down your spine? Since 2000, many of our most anxious and fearful patients have been successfully treated by Dr Jason Gray whilst ‘asleep’. Also known as ‘sleep dentistry’ or ‘twilight sleep’ this intravenous (IV) sedation is administered by a specialist anaesthetist who uses a combination of sedatives and analgesics to create a dream-like state of relaxation bliss.
The dental work to be performed is undertaken in our dental surgery, thus avoiding a day stay in an expensive hospital. Furthermore, we have access to all our usual resources and equipment to maximise efficiency.

Throughout the procedure during sleep dentistry, the specialist anaesthetist will be constantly monitoring your depth of sedation, pulse rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation.
It has been well documented that sedation is both a safe and highly effective means of having any uncomfortable medical or dental procedure completed, and all forms of dentistry can be performed whilst sedated. The great thing about having an IV sedation is that the procedure is amnesic – that is you can’t remember the events of the procedure. Furthermore, the sleep dentistry (IV sedation) is completely pain free.
Recovery is very quick and after close monitoring most patients are ready to be transported home within 30 minutes of waking up. However, you will not be able to operate machinery for the remainder of the day. Most people even have a different outlook towards dentistry after having their treatment performed pain free under IV sedation.
